What do you do?

“I write about football, specialising in the transfer market and game analysis. I spend a lot of time thinking about the game and, in particular the management of the game which interests me most and I use my site as a way to share my thoughts and try to get people to challenge conventional wisdom and view the game for themselves.”

Why?

“A lot of mainstream football writing is littered with laziness and poor research, which I find very frustrating. I studied History which means that I have good research skills, so to me there is no reason not to look beyond what you first see and think about things for yourself. I feel that this gives me a bit of a niche in the market. I know a lot about football and believe that I present it in an accessible but still challenging way.”

How do I get as good as you?

“I try to just write in my own voice. The worst writing is stuff which is designed to imitate someone else. I also spend a lot of time researching and thinking. For me, if I don’t know more than I am planning on writing then I won’t write about it. If I can’t add anything to the discourse and if I am just repeating what anyone can come up with for themselves then I wouldn’t write. Write as you would speak, although of course in a more refined manner. I view writing as a filtered version of how I would speak. This helps me to connect with my readers and they respect that I have my own voice.”

Cheers.
